DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — One of the nation’s biggest lottery prizes got a little bigger Thursday as the Mega Millions jackpot increased to an estimated $1.1 billion.
The increase ahead of Friday night’s drawing makes the jackpot the third largest, behind $1.5 billion prizes won in 2018 and 2016.

Kentucky’s governor said it could take weeks to find all the victims of flash flooding that killed at least 16 people when heavy rains turned streams into torrents that swamped towns across Appalachia. More rainstorms were forecast to roll through in coming days, keeping the region on edge as rescue crews struggled to get into hard-hit areas that include some of the poorest places in America. It’s the latest in a string of catastrophic deluges that have hammered parts of the U.S. this summer, including St. Louis this week. A 10% reduction in West Virginia's income tax proposed by Gov. Jim Justice has stalled in the state Senate. Instead of taking up the Republican governor’s proposal Friday, the Senate explained its intentions to reduce the personal property tax and business inventory tax. Voters in November are being asked in November to approve a constitutional amendment that would allow lawmakers to do so. The GOP-controlled House easily passed the income tax cut Thursday without debate. Senate President Craig Blair has said an income tax reduction alone would not aid the state economy or attract businesses and new residents.
An Alabama grand jury has indicted a 70-year-old man on capital murder charges in the fatal shooting deaths of three people at a church potluck dinner in June. Al.com reported Friday that a Jefferson County grand jury this week indicted Robert Findlay Smith in the June 16 shootings of 84-year-old Walter “Bart” Rainey; 75-year-old Sarah Yeager; and 84-year-old Jane Pounds. The report cited court documents as saying prosecutors presented the case Thursday to a grand jury, which returned the indictments. Authorities have not yet identified a motive in the slayings. Smith remains held without bond, and a trial date has not been set.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ media company Free Speech Systems has filed for bankruptcy, but his attorney says it shouldn't disrupt the defamation damages trial underway in Texas that seeks to force Jones to pay $150 million or more to the family of one of the children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School attack. The trial in Austin, where Jones lives and Free Speech Systems is based, wrapped up its first week of testimony and is expected to conclude next week. The bankruptcy filing was announced in court late in the day. Courts in Texas and Connecticut have already found Jones liable for defamation for his portrayal of the Sandy Hook massacre as a hoax.

The House has approved wide-ranging legislation aimed at helping communities in the West cope with increasingly severe wildfires and drought — fueled by climate change — that have caused billions of dollars of damage to homes and businesses in recent years. The measure combines 49 separate bills and would increase firefighter pay and benefits; boost resiliency and mitigation projects for communities affected by climate change; protect watersheds; and make it easier for wildfire victims to get federal assistance. The bill now goes to the Senate.

A Massachusetts man has been arrested for threatening to blow up Arizona’s top election official following the 2020 election that saw former President Donald Trump lose in the state. James W. Clark of Falmouth made an initial court appearance in Boston on Friday. The 38-year-ild faces a three-count indictment charging him with threatening to explode a bomb in Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs’ “personal space” if she did not resign. Court records do not show a lawyer for Clark, or show if he remains in custody. The threat was sent on Feb. 21, 2021, through an online form maintained by the Secretary of State’ s election department. It was one of countless threats made against Hobbs for her role in certifying the 2020 election.
A federal appeals court has ruled against a group of New York parents who sued after the state made it more difficult for children to get a medical exemption from school immunization requirements. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court’s dismissal of a lawsuit filed by families and Children’s Health Defense, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s anti-vaccine group. The lawsuit challenged state rules that were tightened in 2019 after a major measles outbreak. Children now can get an exemption from required vaccines only if they have rare medical conditions. The families said their rights had been violated.

Atlanta Dream guard AD Durr will miss the remainder of the WNBA season to prepare for right hip surgery. The team announced it ias shutting down Durr, who averaged 10.7 points and 1.9 rebounds in 15 games with the Dream. Durr recorded three 20-point games and led the team in scoring on four occasions after being acquired in a June trade with the New York Liberty. Durr was the second overall pick in the 2019 draft out of Louisville.
International tourism in Mexico has finally surpassed the pre-pandemic levels, after 10.26 million visitors came to the country in the first half of 2022. Mexico's Tourism Department noted that was 1.5% more than the 10.11 million tourists who arrived in Mexico in the first half of 2019. Mexico's strongest showing was with U.S. tourists. The number of Americans arriving by air in the first six months of the year was 6.66 million; that is 19.1% higher than in the same period of 2019. It is not clear whether the war in Ukraine, which may have discouraged some Americans from visiting Europe.
Domenico Vicini reached another Davis Cup milestone by becoming the first player in tournament history to play 100 matches. It came two days after the 50-year-old became the oldest player to win a Davis Cup match. The San Marino player who turns 51 in September played a doubles match with 17-year-old Simone De Luigi against Iceland in Europe Group 4 play. They lost 6-2, 6-3 to Rafn Bonifacius and Daniel Siddall. Vicini says reaching the century mark is “a great achievement for me.” Vicini won his doubles match on Wednesday against Albania. Three years ago Vicini set a Davis Cup record as the oldest player to win a singles match. That was at age 47 years, 318 days.
Taking a day of regular training camp away from their team facilities, the Minnesota Vikings traveled for an afternoon practice at U.S. Bank Stadium as a way for the new coaching staff and players to become more comfortable with their gameday surroundings. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is using federal COVID-19 relief money to give teachers another $125 to buy school supplies. The move comes months after he issued a similar stipend. A Republican who is running for reelection, Kempt made the announcement Friday at a high school in Henry County. Teachers got $125 for supplies from the same source last year. The last supplement cost about $15.9 million. The total cost for this round of spending has yet to be finalized. Democrats say Kemp is getting credit for handing out COVID-19 relief when he and other Republicans opposed some spending.
A federal judge has seized control of a Mississippi jail after citing “severely deficient” conditions at the facility. U.S. Southern District of Mississippi judge Carlton Reeves placed Hinds County’s Raymond Detention Center into receivership. The judge will soon appoint an expert, known as a “receiver,” to temporarily manage the facility in hopes of improving its conditions. Reeves said that deficiencies in supervision and staffing lead to “a stunning array of assaults, as well as deaths.” Seven individuals died last year while detained at the jail. An attorney at the Brennan Center for Justice said only eight other times in U.S. history has a judge placed a local jail or state prison into receivership.

The Kansas City Royals activated All-Star catcher Salvador Perez from the injured list and put him in the starting lineup against the New York Yankees. The reigning major league home run leader was set to bat third as the designated hitter barely a month after surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. Kansas City initially estimated the 32-year-old Perez would need eight weeks to recover after surgery June 24, but doctors assured the club he was ready for big league action. Perez, a seven-time All-Star, played three minor league rehab games with Triple-A Omaha and went 4 for 8.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has said that he stopped at a campaign fundraiser following the deadly school shooting in Uvalde and “let people know” he couldn’t stay, but a newspaper reports that he was there for nearly three hours. The Dallas Morning News reported Thursday that campaign finance reports and flight-tracking records show that Abbott arrived in Huntsville at 4:52 p.m. on May 24 — which was hours after the shooting at Robb Elementary School — and was then was driven about 2 miles to a local supporter’s house. He didn’t leave the city till 7:47 p.m. A spokeswoman for Abbott's campaign says that the governor has been forthright about his movements that day.
